JCNDE Seeks Public Member

The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) seeks a member of the public to serve as a Commissioner, with a four-year term beginning October 18, 2022 and concluding in fall of 2026. Nominations are currently sought, with self-nominations also welcome.

The JCNDE is responsible for the development and administration of the National Board Examinations (NBEs)—including the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE), the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE), and the Dental Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Examination (DLOSCE)—which are used by dental and dental hygiene boards across the United States to understand the qualifications of candidates seeking licensure to practice dentistry and dental hygiene. The sixteen Commissioners of the JCNDE oversee the policies and procedures of the NBE programs, which have important implications for the public health. The individuals who serve on the JCNDE hold a variety of perspectives, having been appointed by associations composed of dental and/or dental hygiene board members, dental educators, dental practitioners, dental hygiene practitioners, and dental students.

The JCNDE’s mission is as follows:

Protecting public health through valid, reliable and fair assessments of knowledge, skills, and abilities, to inform decisions that help ensure safe and effective patient care by qualified oral healthcare team members.

Additional information about the JCNDE and its examination programs appears on the JCNDE homepage.

The JCNDE’s Public Member provides the perspective of the public to further inform the decisions of the JCDNE, thereby playing a critical role in helping the JCNDE fulfill its mission.  Given the importance of this role, the Public Member must be free from conflicts of interest and must agree to abide by certain terms if selected by the JCNDE to serve. Well-qualified candidates will be experienced in health issues, testing, credentialing, and/or advocating for the interests of the public. Individuals wishing to serve as the Public Member must disclose in their application materials any financial benefits they may be receiving from the examination programs of the JCNDE. The JCNDE’s public member is appointed directly by the JCNDE, which carefully scrutinizes submitted applications.

The JCNDE is now accepting applications to serve as the Commission’s Public Member.  Please download and review important information detailing the Qualifications for a Public Member (PDF) to serve as a Commissioner for the JCNDE. The deadline for submission is April 29, 2022.  The JCNDE will review applications in May and June of 2022, with a decision announced in July of 2022.

INBDE Practice Questions

INBDE Practice Questions are available for candidates interested in taking the examination. These questions were developed by test constructors who are developing the INBDE examination and were previously used for INBDE Field Tests.

Download the INBDE practice questions (PDF) that are now available for use by stakeholders and communities of interest in preparing for the INBDE.

All practice items are the copyrighted property of the JCNDE. The practice items are intended for the use of educators and students within the educational environment or for individual study and may not be reproduced in any format, whether paper or electronic, without expressed written permission of the JCNDE.

Update to Eligibility Policy

Under the JCNDE Five Years/Five Attempts Eligibility Rule, candidates must pass the examination within:

  • five years of their first attempt or
  • five examination attempts, whichever comes first

Subsequent to the fifth year or fifth attempt, candidates may test once every 12 months after their most recent examination attempt.

Important Note Concerning Periodontology Terminology

In 2017, the American Academy of Periodontology introduced new classifications. These new classifications will appear on the INBDE and the Dental Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Examination (DLOSCE), and they will be implemented in the fall of 2020 for the NBDE Part II and in the fall of 2021 for the NBDHE. Download and review the information below.

During the transition period, it is recommended that individuals become knowledgeable with both sets of classifications, because individual researchers, practitioners, and existing textbooks can communicate information using either set of classifications. Periodontal educators recommend that individuals refer to the 2017 World Workshop On the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-implant Diseases and Conditions on the American Academy of Periodontology website

INBDE Formal Notification

The JCNDE has issued a formal notification (PDF) that the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) will be available for administration beginning on August 1, 2020. The NBDE Part I will be discontinued on July 31, 2020, and the NBDE Part II will be discontinued on August 1, 2022.
